Russia has temporarily halted navigation through the Don-Azov Canal, which links the Don River to the Sea of Azov. They have also ceased accepting applications for passage through the Kerch Strait, connecting the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.

This information comes from Reuters, citing three sources within the grain export industry.

The decision was made following a Ukrainian strike on July 10th, which targeted 13 Russian vessels in the Sea of Azov, including 10 tankers.

One source indicated that Russian border guards informed shipping companies about the suspension of all applications for passage through the Kerch Strait, effective from 18:10 local time. The notification did not specify when these restrictions would be lifted.

Market analysts note that up to a quarter of Russia’s wheat exports transit through the Sea of Azov. The Rostov and Krasnodar regions, leading grain producers in Russia, are situated along this sea. The Kerch Strait also serves as the location for Russia’s second-largest port in the Black Sea region.

Amidst reports of a potential closure of maritime traffic through the Sea of Azov, wheat prices on Euronext rose by 4% on July 10th, reaching their highest level in six weeks.

Previously, it was reported that 35 Russian tankers, dry cargo ships, and special vessels were hit. The night of July 9th proved to be the most effective, with SBU drones striking 12 tankers, one dry cargo ship, and one tugboat. In total, between July 6th and 9th, Ukrainian drone strikes damaged 25 tankers, 6 dry cargo ships, one ferry, and one tugboat.
