The current shift in the battlefield situation presents Ukraine with a significant diplomatic opportunity to conduct successful negotiations with Russia for ending the war on favorable terms.

For the first time in several years, Ukraine has managed to seize the initiative on the battlefield and has begun to reclaim more territory than Russian forces are capturing. Simultaneously, this window of opportunity may only remain open for the next six to nine months. During this period, Kyiv can leverage its new military successes as a crucial argument in future negotiations with Moscow.
This is reported by The Hill, citing military analysts and Ukrainian commanders.
According to expert assessments, the war is gradually shifting in Ukraine’s favor. George Barros, an analyst at the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), noted that for the first time since 2023, Ukrainian forces are recapturing more territory than the Russian army is occupying.
ISW believes this achievement is due to the exhaustion of Russian forces, the effective use of drones, and new tactical decisions by the Ukrainian command.
Experts point out that Russia is finding it increasingly difficult to sustain large-scale offensive operations, while Ukrainian forces have learned to more effectively disrupt the enemy’s logistics and command and control assets.
Drones Played a Decisive Role
One of the key factors in the changing situation on the front lines has been Ukraine’s dominance in drone technology.
Anatol Lieven, a senior fellow at the Quincy Institute, stated that Ukrainian drones have significantly expanded the so-called “kill zone” around the front line, making any movement of Russian troops extremely hazardous.
According to him, the Russian army is increasingly unable to concentrate sufficient manpower and armored vehicles to break through Ukrainian defenses.
Barros also emphasized that the turning point began to form as early as the end of 2025, when Ukrainian forces launched a systematic campaign to destroy Russian radar systems, electronic warfare complexes, air defense systems, and other assets that ensured control of the airspace.
The Next 6-9 Months Could Determine the War’s Outcome
Analysts warn that Ukraine’s current advantage is not guaranteed to be long-term.
George Barros described the current situation as a “rare and fleeting opportunity” that Kyiv and its allies must maximize now.
He noted that he is not prepared to predict the maintenance of current advantages in nine months, which is why international support for Ukraine is particularly important right now.
Andriy Biletsky, commander of the 3rd Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, echoed a similar assessment. In an interview with Reuters, he stated that the next six to nine months will be a turning point in the war.
According to him, Russian forces are experiencing an increasingly acute shortage of personnel and are no longer capable of advancing at the same pace as a year ago.
Front-Line Successes as Leverage in Negotiations
The Hill notes that the current shift in the battlefield situation creates a significant diplomatic opportunity for Ukraine.
If Kyiv manages to consolidate and build upon its successes in the coming months, it could substantially strengthen Ukraine’s position during potential peace negotiations with Russia.
This is precisely why the Ukrainian leadership is actively urging allies to increase military aid. In particular, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to the U.S. President and Congress to enhance the supply of Patriot systems and air defense munitions amid Russia’s preparations for a new wave of air attacks.
According to the publication’s sources, the coming months could be key not only for the situation on the front lines but also for shaping the conditions for a potential end to the war. If the current advantage can be converted into further successes, Ukraine will gain much stronger arguments for achieving peace on terms favorable to it.
Russia-Ukraine Negotiations – What is Known
Recall that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that trilateral negotiations between Ukraine, the Russian Federation, and the United States are not taking place because they are not yielding results.
At the same time, Russia is intensifying threats against Ukraine while simultaneously attempting to bring the United States back into negotiations for an end to the war.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga stated that Ukraine and the European Union have sufficient leverage to bring about the end of the war with Russia. According to him, now is the moment when these opportunities must be seized.
Earlier, The Washington Post noted that Russia’s war against Ukraine, initiated by Vladimir Putin, has entered a situation of strategic “zugzwang” for the Kremlin, where any further move only worsens the situation.
