Russian retail trade, according to retailers and consulting companies, is experiencing one of the most difficult periods in recent years.

The Moscow Times writes about this.

According to market data, the vacancy rate in Moscow shopping centers by the end of the first half of the year may reach about 6%, compared to 5.3% at the end of 2025. By the end of the year, the indicator may exceed 8%, which corresponds to the levels of four years ago.

The worst situation is observed in the clothing and footwear segment – it accounts for almost half of all closed stores. Significant losses are also recorded among home appliance and electronics stores.

Experts explain the crisis by a combination of factors: an increase in the cost of credit, a decline in consumer demand, a shift of buyers to marketplaces, inflation, and an increase in administrative pressure on business.

Analysts note that in the short term, there are no prerequisites for an improvement in the market situation.

Earlier it was reported that Russia is selling off its gold reserves at a record pace to cover the budget deficit.

We previously informed that the Kremlin’s oil revenues are rapidly declining, and the Central Bank has recorded the largest reduction in gold reserves in 24 years.
