A Russian strike has impacted another NATO country – a drone exploded in a residential building in Romania.

During the night of May 29th, amidst Russian strikes on Ukraine, a drone entered a 10-story building in the city of Galați, Romania. City authorities have condemned this act.
This was announced by the mayor of the Galați municipality, Ionuț-Florin Pucheanu.
“Over the past few hours, we have experienced a moment that no one could have imagined in a peaceful European city. I strongly condemn any attack that endangers civilians and communities on the border of a war that is not ours, but whose consequences are felt ever closer,” he emphasized.
According to Pucheanu, the drone fell on an apartment building, causing an explosion. Two people were injured. He described the situation in the city after the drone’s “arrival” as controlled. The area is currently secured, and specialists are assessing the aftermath of the incident.
Concurrently, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs referred to the UAV incident as a “serious and irresponsible escalation” by Russia.
“Romania will take the necessary diplomatic measures in response to this serious violation of international law and its airspace,” the statement read.
Drone Crash in Romania – NATO’s Reaction
NATO spokesperson Allison Hart stated that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Romanian authorities are in contact following the Russian attack. According to her, the Alliance “condemns Russia’s irresponsible actions.”
“NATO will continue to strengthen our defenses against all threats, including drones,” the Alliance spokesperson declared.
Russian Drone in Romania – What is Known
During the night, a drone crashed into a multi-story building in the Romanian city of Galați. As a result of the incident, two people were injured. Seventy residents were evacuated from the building. The country’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that the UAV was of Russian origin.
To intercept the drone, two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled from the Fetești airbase at 01:19, supported by a helicopter. The pilots were authorized to engage the aerial target. However, the Romanian military did not destroy the Russian drone due to “very strict limitations” within the army regarding such actions.
