Putin’s unsuccessful war in Ukraine may accelerate the collapse of Russia, and the Russian Federation itself is “just a shadow of its former self.”
This was stated on the program On the Record on TVP World by Norman Davies, a British-Polish historian specializing in the history of Europe, Poland, and the Central and Eastern region.

Analyzing the over twenty-year rule of the Russian dictator, Davies noted the collapse of his geopolitical ambitions:
“Putin’s attempts to restore the Soviet Union or at least the Russian Empire in a new form have completely failed,” says the historian.
According to the researcher, Putin has only managed to regain isolated fragments of the former Soviet sphere of influence. At the same time, the Russian dictator has demonstrated the obvious limits of his country’s military capabilities to the world. The war against Ukraine has become a global demonstration of the Russian Federation’s weakness.
Moreover, Davies noted that Moscow is increasingly subordinate to Beijing and has become a vassal of China. In the expert’s opinion, the next stage of the empire’s disintegration could begin precisely in the Russian Far East, where China already dominates trade and actively extracts natural resources.
The city of Vladivostok is located on territory that the Qing Empire ceded to the Russian Empire in the 19th century, and it is only a matter of time before China reclaims these lands.
Will Russian elites force Putin to stop?
As a reminder, the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Hakan Fidan. During the meeting, the parties analyzed the situation on the diplomatic front and discussed finding mechanisms to resume the negotiation process to end the war.
Hakan Fidan provided detailed information about Turkey’s mediation initiatives aimed at achieving lasting peace.
Separately, the parties focused on analyzing the sentiments within the Russian leadership regarding plans to continue or end the war. They also discussed how long-range strikes by the Ukrainian Defense Forces affect the public mood in Russia, the Russian economy, and internal political processes.
